Applying for a job is easy but to be better at applying for a job needs a lot of knowledge and practice. You have to know the right way to impress the employer from the way you write your resume and also from their first impression on the interview day itself. Both, resume and how you represent yourself on that day might have an influence on the hiring manager’s first impression on who you are.
Do you know what a first impression is? Generally, a first impression is the first thought or opinion someone has about you following their first encounter with you. Several aspects, such as how you appear, what you dress, how you speak, and your general emotional state, may determine someone’s first impression of you.
There are things that you can do before the interview, during the interview and after the interview. These things that you will do will portray so many things about you such as your preparation before getting the job and also what are your potential in improving yourself and giving benefits to the company.
The first and important thing is before the interview itself. You have to know basic things about the interview such as how to speak, how to react, how to answer unexpected questions and most importantly how to appear as confident as you can in front of the hiring manager. After you have mastered the interview session, you should start doing a little bit of research about the company you are applying to. This is because the amount of information you have actually reflects on how you do the preparation.
Do you think any employer will hire people who know nothing about them? No. Most of the time, they will not hire this kind of person. For example, if you are applying for a job as an auditor at one of the frozen food suppliers in Malaysia, you should at least know the basic thing such as do they ship their frozen food worldwide?
Next, while getting ready for the interview, you must make sure that your appearance is appropriate. Do not overdressed or underdressed. Wear anything appropriate for the job you are applying for. Bear in mind, you are always welcomed to wear perfumes or cologne but make sure that the smell is not too strong that it might distract the interviewers’ attention.
During the interview, the first thing that you have to do is to greet the interviewer warmly. Show them that you are confident with yourself and you are capable of handling that job. Remember, first impressions matter. Keep on smiling (but don’t make it creepy) and look into their eyes but not all the time. Avoid making any awkward and uncomfortable gestures. When they ask you to introduce yourself and tell some details about yourself, make sure to answer with enthusiasm. It portrays how energetic you are and that you are fit for the position.
If the interviewers asked unexpected questions. Don’t panic, don’t show that you are not confident enough with your answer. Answer them with confidence and if you don’t know how to answer it, just tell them politely.
Lastly, the most important thing to do after a job interview that will make a good impression of yourself is by sending the company a follow-up message or email. This action will show that you are actually serious in applying for that position.
